Working in a special needs classroom can be challenging. Each individual has different needs and they all need to be addressed on a daily basis. One student, who tended to be very anxious and sometimes violent, was on the verge of being taken out of school and institutionalized. At the time it seems like the only option available and we felt very bad for his parents. They have seen many specialist over the years and or offered different drug treatments to try to calm him down but none of them seemed effective. Some of them had such debilitating side effects that he was in a zombie-like state all the time and that wasn’t beneficial for him either. Is Mom called one day and said that he would be out of school for a week, and I have to admit it was kind of a relief. She then went on to say that he was going to be participating in a new study in hopes of finding a solution for his problem. She didn’t give many details about the program but we were hopeful for her that they would come up with some sort of solution. When he returned to school the following week we were amazed to see a different child. Then she handed a note to the teacher that was shocking. Her son had been prescribed the use of medical marijuana on a daily basis to help relieve some of his anxiety and violent tendencies. We were so amazed at the difference in the child that was standing before us that we knew it was probably the best thing that could have happened. The study that he had participated in was difficult to get into but it was a life-changing event for him. He was actually social with some of the other students and able to concentrate on learning instead of worrying about everything else.
